Who Knew I'd End Up in the Classified Ads?

Part 2 of my 50-year journey to correct the gender on my birth certificate.

(O,ha! May part 3 pa ito. Abangan! 😄)

So ayun na nga, four days after my visit to Window 4 at the Local Civil Registry, I found myself standing outside the office of The Southern Review, one of General Santos City's local newspapers.

Not because I had breaking news.

Not because I was launching a new business.

And definitely not because I was looking for a date in the classified ads. 😛

I was there to have my Petition for Correction of the Sex Entry in my Birth Certificate published.

Hello, world!

I'm actually female! 😂

For someone who's has appeared on local TVs and social media platforms because of content creation, community work, and events, this was probably the most unexpected reason my name would ever be printed.

Wait... Why Does It Need to Be Published?

When I first learned about this requirement, I honestly wondered the same thing.

"Why does everyone need to know?"

Ang sabi, it's actually a legal safeguard.

For petitions under Republic Act No. 10172, publication gives the public an opportunity to raise any legitimate objection before the correction is finalized. It's part of ensuring that changes to civil registry records are transparent and made in good faith.

In other words...

No, the government isn't announcing that I suddenly became female. 😂

They're announcing that they're correcting a clerical error that has followed me for half a century.

There's a huge difference.

A Full-Circle Moment

Walking into The Southern Review felt strangely symbolic ( and somewhat nostalgic as I once worked on a local paper, too. Pagemaker pa nga ang gamit ko! 😜)

Twenty-five years ago, I walked into a government office dreaming of getting my passport and hopefully finding work abroad.

Instead, I walked out devastated after discovering that my birth certificate identified me as male.

Today, I'm walking into a newspaper office not with disappointment...

...but with hope.

Hope that this chapter is finally coming to an end.

Hope that one small word that has caused decades of inconvenience will finally be corrected.

To Whoever Reads My Petition...

If you happen to come across my name in the newspaper over the next few days, don't panic. (It's organic !😝 )

No, I'm not changing my identity.

No, this isn't some dramatic life announcement.

It's simply the government fixing a typo that should have been corrected years ago.

And honestly...

I don't think anyone is about to file an objection insisting that I'm actually male.

I mean...

How the hell would I have given birth to three amazing kids if I were? 😆

The Waiting Game Begins

With the publication underway, all I can do now is wait.

Fingers crossed that after 50 years, the finish line is finally within sight.

I'll keep you updated as this journey continues--- na para bang interesado ka! Lolz!

Who knew one tiny word on a birth certificate would turn into a blog series? Char!
