18 Things About My Maya

9:03 AM 0 Comments A+ a-

  1. Maya is Maria Ysabella in real life. Maria because she's born in the month of the holy rosary. Ysabella because I simply like how it sounds.
  2. She is our favorite daughter.  Only girl po siya.

  3. She's the namesake of my boss Maya Cartojano, who was very kind to drive me to the birthing place when I was having contractions 18 years ago today.
  4. She was my first business partner. We would walk the streets with my Tupperware Kit on my left hand and her tiny fingers on my right. I would place her on countertops while I do business.
  5. She was confined when she was just more than a year old where she cried nonstop calling for Lolo Daddy. This caught the attention of Businessman Pet Amadeo who thought the baby might be uncomfortable in that semi-private room so he moved us to a private room and paid for it.
  6. She can barely recognize the letter F when she was kid trying to learn her ABCs. Dinala ko na siya sa lahat ng sulok ng bahay, sa ilalim ng puno ng balimbing at loob ng banyo. Wa epek. She just cant recognize EF.
  7. She would sing "constantly" with Lowla Mommy.
  8. When she was 6, she won as Little Kristala in Sara Lee's local competitions where she had to wear her Tita's bathing suit, tied with lastiko at the back so that it would look snugly fit on her, a pair of poorly dyed stockings which failed to achieve the royal blue color and a piece of kitchen curtain as cape!
  9. She joined Marasa Grill's Basic Cooking Lessons by Chef Kring when she was in grade 4. She learned how to cook eggs: fried, boiled, sunny side up and poached. She learned to cook basic adobo and fried fish. Today, she prepares dinner for the family, sometimes with fried egg and adobo. Pero marunong na xang magsigang and magluto ng maski-paps with a little help from Mama Sita: Oyster Sows.
  10. What's in my cabinet is IN her wardrobe too! In short, ang damit ko ay dinadamit na rin niya. So if wala ang blouse ko, i go like "MAYAAAAAAAA!".
  11. She fits in my shoes! So when I go shop for shoes , she's like "Wag yan Ma, di ko man yan gusto!....or Wag yan ma, di ko man yan masuot!"...dictator te?
  12. Maya likes PINK! And hello kitty, and mustache thingy.
  13. She and her kuya ran away from home when they were kids with a few clothes inside a sando bag na nakatali sa dulo ng patpat! They went to a cornfield that was just a few meters from home---Kay nakasab-an man!
  14. Maya had natural wavy hair and has always wanted a straight one. So she got a RELAX treatment for her 10th birthday. At dahil first time and matapang ang gamot, abah, naligo agad xa pag-uwi ng bahay. Gaaakkk! Goodbye treatment. Ako tuloy ang hindi na-relax! Kaloka!
  15. She's the wife of LUFFY....say what??! She's now into instagram rather than FB.
  16. She's a kid gangstah! Her favorite teleserye character is the villain named "Bagyo" in ABSCBN's "Mula sa Puso" played by the late Mark Gil, thus her nickname (one of the many nicknames she's got) "Beans" , short for Baguio Beans.
  17. She's kinda shy but  she tried the world of modelling. Some people say bumi-Venus Raj siya. Pero ayaw nia kay Venus.
  18. Today she turns 18...legally not blonde, but she'll forever be my little Maya, whose little hands I've held so many times walking down the streets, whose shrieking voice I, can only stand, who bears being told to be my own reflection, whose hair I  have pulled not just twice on rough times but still comes to me on calmer days for a clean braid.

Happy Birthday Ate!
Forever you will always be special to Poppy & Me.
Go on with your journey. Just don't forget your pamasahe.
Don't carry too much luggage, unload excess baggage.
Always remember, you will be your own engineer.
We are proud of you and know in your heart
that you are always LOVED.

Chef Gene Gonzalez Cooks in "Kan-Anan sa Gensan".

12:36 AM 0 Comments A+ a-

Masflex KitchenPro recently staged a cooking demonstration dubbed as "Kan-anan sa Gensan" featuring  no less than the iconic Filipino culinary figure non pareil himself, Chef Gene Gonzalez. This was attended by culinary enthusiasts and HRM students from local schools like STI College, Goldenstate College and Stratford International School.

While waiting for the program to start, the audience were invited to pop some corn using a cookware from Masflex. And once they go popping, the cook gets to enjoy it and takes home a pack of Easy Pop!

It was one prizes-galore day as  KitchenPro Knives ,gift packs from Ideal Pasta , Jolly and Magnolia Devil's Food Cake were raffled off to lucky spectators. And the real show hasn't even started yet!
#68 wins a pack of Magnolia Devil's Food Cake.
One sweet day for my daughter.
 :)

Before the cooking demo started to heat up, the day's host, Hiren Mirchandani, former student of Chef Gene and now the Marketing Manager of Masflex KitchenPro, talked about the company's vision and introduced their line of Culinary Knives as endorsed by their brand ambassador in the person of Chef Gene.

And then it was time to introduce the man of the hour. Chef Gene Gonzalez, owner of Center for Asian Culinary Studies (CACS) ,  has captured his audience's attention as he swiftly navigated through the modular kitchen.

First on the menu was the Durian Roll. Using the freshest ingredients from the grocery section of the KCC Mall, Chef Gene effortlessly  showed the audience how to make durian jam, given that the fruit is so abundant these days . Chef Gene also prepared some panfry glazed daing na bangus and whipped up an appetizer he called ensaladang dadiangas in less than five minutes .

Above: Durian Roll Below: Panfry Glazed Daing na Bangus

Next, Chef Gene was joined by 4 volunteers randomly chosen from the audience. They were to cook  cola-based Sarsiparilla Chicken.

My husband was luckily chosen along with 3 others. And what do you know! Aside from enjoying the chance of cooking with a famous chef, they also get to take home the Dish, the Masflex Aluminum Non-stick Stock Pot and the Serving Dish!

Chef Gene also taught the audience, which was dominated by HRM Students, how to take good care of a knife and how to properly hone it using the Masflex KitchenPro Honing Steel. He said having a really good knife helps cut down total preparation time and makes cooking a breeze . He proudly announced that each and every knife in the Masflex KitchenPro Culinary Knife Collection has been meticulously developed to ensure that their functionality is at its finest.  And to prove to everyone the knife's ultimate sharpness, Chef Gene has skillfully sliced a watermelon in mid-air drawing a loud cheer from the crowd.
My favorite part of this truly fun-filled , delicious and prize-packed event? Drawing of the major prizes! #57 wins! I took home one of the 3 major prizes: Masflex 5-pc. stainless steel cookware set! Winner! Yay!

Here with the Chef!
The photo that made some of my friends green with envy! teehee!

A Glimpse of Glan's Heritage

11:53 PM 0 Comments A+ a-

In an attempt to feature the century -old, culture-rich places of Glan, Sarangani Province in one Heritage Map, members of GBG Gensan conducted the First Glan GeoWalk last July 26, 2014. This was made possible through the initiative of Glan's very active Tourism Officer in the person of Lodar Escobillo and the participation of volunteer mappers from the Sultan Kudarat State University Extension College and some members of the LGU.

Thank God for the good weather, we were able to explore the Poblacion without having to complain about the striking heat of the sun. I especially loved how those beautifully-aged acacia trees towered over us as we toured around the oldest school in town, Glan Central Elementary School. It's awesome how they were able to take good care of the trees while other cities kept on murdering theirs in exchange for modernization.

Next stop was the seat of Catholic Faith in this part of the town. The Sta Catalina de Alexandria Parish, so we've learned,  is the oldest parish to be built in the whole of the SoCCskSargen Area.

c to Pages Flipper

A few more steps led us to the old houses in Glan. We were lucky to have been allowed entry inside the historic house of the late Martin Alegado. Look at the calado-designed facade welcoming us!

A peek inside one of the two Alegado Houses which proudly stands
along the busy E. Alegado Street in Poblacion Glan.
The two houses could definitely make a good Museum
with  the help of a little restoration effort .
c to Ariel Lalisan

Albeit some touch of modern construction being used to hold the old buildings from completely falling apart due to nature's wear and tear, one can still distinguish if the structure is old enough to pass as a part of the century-old heritage of Glan. A number of houses within the Poblacion still boasts of stained glass windows and calado embroidered walls. It is just magnificent!

One of Glan's Old Houses: The La Paz Residence,
undergoing restoration in preparation for the upcoming celebration of Glan's Centennial

One's visit to Poblacion Glan will never be complete without a visit to Colony # 9 along the baywalk. Colony # 9 was one of the Agricultural Colonies in Mindanao thru the Colonization Law of Don Sergio Osmena Sr., wherein the Late Don Tranquilino Ruiz of Alegria, Cebu , has been appointed as Superintendent.

These are just some of the historical sites that we were able to visit during our GeoWalk. Volunteer mappers and some locals will still be doing an inventory of these sites for the upcoming release of Glan's Cultural Heritage Map.

If you are willing  to be a part of this group, please coordinate with the office of Ms. Lodar Escobillo, the Municipal Tourism Officer of Glan, Sarangani Province.

Glan is celebrating its 100th Founding Anniversary on October 8, 2014.

The Sunday Famers' Market Habit

1:23 AM 0 Comments A+ a-

My husband and I have recently developed a weekend habit of visiting the Sunday Farmers' Market at the Ramas Residence in Lagao, General Santos City.

Every Sunday, Ms. Rue Ramas, Lead Marketing Advocate of Corn Husk Craft Makers and Administrator of A Seed Grows in Facebook, opens the family garden from 7:00 in the morning to 12:00 noon. The Ramas Garden has become home to suppliers of fresh, farm-picked and mostly organic produce of vegetables, fruits , poultry and more!

One thing I like about the Farmers' Market is the absence of a wet, slippery and smelly atmosphere you'll find in the usual marketplace. Children can actually just run around the place while dear Mum completes her shopping list, and the price is friendly to the pocket too.

SFM  immediately became a hit among early morning joggers, church goers and FB likers. I usually find familiar faces doing a shopping frenzy coupled with excited tones of panic buying there---as if magkakaubusan ng mabibili ! (Hihihi)
Former Akabayan Rep. Mario Aguja

Pinoy delicacies like suman, biko , palitaw and binignit are also available for shoppers like me, who shops and dines at the same time! I especially love the Puto from Batchoy King. First -time shoppers almost always end up on an eating binge at the Farmers Market.
Eggplants , onions and chorizos hit the grill

Devoured what we have bought from the Market!
My Gang! Great supporters of the SFM

The Sunday Farmers' Market has definitely become a must-go in this part of the City. So if you haven't been there yet, you better get your shopping bags ready before you hit the road to the Ramas Residence this Sunday.

Prepare to be delighted with a range of fresh and delicious good finds there!

The Sunday Farmers' Market is located in front of NDDU Ibed, Lagao, General Santos City.
