General Santos Doctors Hospital : 46 Years of Healing through Compassionate Caring.

10:18 PM 0 Comments A+ a-

General Santos Doctors Hospital celebrated its 46th Foundation Anniversary on December 8, 2016, alongside the celebration for the Immaculate Conception of Mary. The year 2016 has been a full of progress for the institution, both in structure and in service.

One of the landmarks of the year is the launching of the first Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in General Santos City on June 9. In the past, patients had to travel to Davao City to undergo MRI scans. Most often these come with a risk due to the stress of the travel and the patient’s condition. With the availability of an MRI machine in the city, health care outcomes for brain injuries are expected to improve immensely.

To support the needs of its patients, the hospital partnered with the Medical Express Pharmacy and opened a branch within the Medical Suites Building. Opened on July 5, patients had access to more affordable medicines backed with the pharmacy’s client follow-up system where they remind clients of their medication schedules through friendly phone calls.
At 46 years, GSDH continues its mission in improving the healthcare delivery system of the city. Two new in-patient care stations were opened on February 25(2E) and July 7 (3E), accommodating a total of 52 beds. This was tremendously necessary as hospitals nowadays are bombarded with patients waiting in line for room accommodations.

GSDH has also kept reaching out, conducting Free Diabetes Risk Assessments and Medical Missions to various areas and communities like the Medical Suites Building, General Santos City Fish Port and for the residents of Baranggay City Heights held at the St. Michael Parish. The activity was able to help more than two hundred individuals and provided them the necessary information to a better healthy lifestyle. In the next year, these activities are expected to be conducted all year-round.

With the approaching Foundation Anniversary, the GSDH Staff held its annual Coastal Clean-up Activity at Purok Minanga, Brgy. Buayan on December 7 as part of its mission to be stewards of the environment. The area is also where the staff invests in mangrove planting to facilitate the growth of mangrove trees that will help us against climate change.
On the day of the Foundation Anniversary, the newly renovated Emergency Room was revealed and will start serving the community in 2017. The two additional in-patient care stations at the fourth and fifth floors of the hospital’s Building E will also open next year after final furnishings are done. On the same day during the foundation anniversary program, the improved company logo and corporate video was launched. As 2016 ends with promises for 2017, General Santos Doctors Hospital commits to fulfill them for the people and provide healing through compassionate caring at 46 years and beyond. (PR)

TGCI Making a Difference: BPI’s Sinag Accelerate Winner 2016
The Churner Group Inc. (TGCI) was among the 10 winners of this year’s BPI Sinag Accelerate challenge. The program aims to engage and uplift those at the bottom of the pyramid through the establishment of Social Enterprises. The BPI Sinag Challenge aims to discover, capacitate, recognize and support social entrepreneurs who can help uplift Filipino communities. Social enterprises that are ready to scale-up and expand, while deepening impact in community development.

SOCIAL ENTERPRISE MODEL
Many barangays in SOCSARGEN are considered to be among the poorest areas in the nation, according to the Philippine Poverty Index. The project aims to provide a continuing livelihood program for the farmers and their families so as to earn enough money to put food on their tables three times a day, send their children to school, and eventually purchase a motor bike to be used for harvesting and/or delivery of coconut syrup.

The program also allows for the multi-culturally diverse workforce of Muslims, Christians and Indigenous People (Tboli, Blaan and Manobo) to continue working side by side in one facility. The production of coconut sugar in Tupi, South Cotobato is also a joint project between TCGI and the Mindanawan Coco Sugar Corporation comprising of MNLF rebel returnees sustaining the current peace and development initiatives in the area.
Income on the countryside.
Since  vast coconut trees were found on the countryside, income opportunities await the farm owners, tappers, and those without income by engaging in tapping or cooking of coco sap. Many indigenous people, even without formal education, get trained and engaged in the enterprise.

Wellness. Diabetes is the number one killer according to the World Health Organization. 1 out of 11 people are diabetic. Generally, only 50% of these people know they are diabetic. Coconut Sugar is a low-glycemic index sugar, hence it is an ideal sweetener and sugar substitute beneficial for people with diabetes or watching their sugar intake. The market for coconut sugar is increasing locally and globally.

Stewardship.Areas are being converted to organic as required in the organic certification. No pesticides or synthetic fertilizers will be used.(PR)

Business Opportunity
1.       TCGI is expanding and looking for dwarf coconut plantation to be rented;
2.       Looking for tappers to tap at least 25 coconut trees a day;
3.       Buying coco-syrup.

Please keep in touch with Mr. Danny D. Sabino, Plant Manager at 09175543869 or you may also visit them at their Tupi Facility Plant, Brgy. Palian, Tupi, South Cotabato.

SM General Santos is bringing the film which gave the Philippine Team an extended standing ovation at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival to the Generals for a 1-Day screening. Watch out as Ma' Rosa hits SM Gensan Cinema's big screens (Cinema 1 & 2) on Dec. 7th.

A film directed by Brillante Mendoza, Ma' Rosa was selected to compete at the Cannes, winning the Best Actress trophy for the lead, Jaclyn Jose. In the film, Jose plays a mom who sells prohibited drugs with her husband Nestor, played by Julio Diaz.Their fate changes when their neighbor sets them up for a police raid leading to their arrest.

Director’s Statement
"The idea of this film came up four years ago when I became indirectly involved with the said incident. It captures my interest to tell this story because it shows a unique but also disturbing characteristic of a common Filipino family. That when a family member is backed against the wall for the wrong doings that he or she made, you will do everything to keep them out of trouble even if it means violating basic virtuous. In a society where survival of the fittest is a fact that we have to live with, family becomes amoral."

Ma' Rosa also casts Baron Geisler , Jomari Angeles, Neil Ryan Sese, Mercedes Cabral, Andi Eigenmann, Mark Anthony Fernandez, Felix Roco, Mon Confiado and Maria Isabel Lopez.

The Gensan Screening on December 7 will be preceded by a media launch at the SM Event Center (Dec. 6) at 5:00 in the afternoon, with the film director himself, Mr. Brillante Mendoza.

Screening tickets for Ma'Rosa sell at P150. For group bookings and ticket reservations, please visit the SM Cinema Office and look for Mr. Marc Mabilog.

It's MUNATO FESTIVAL Once More!

6:38 AM 0 Comments A+ a-

The young province of Sarangani is celebrating its 24th founding anniversary and the 14th  MunaTo Festival. This festival commemorates the birth of Sarangani province with the celebration of its People, Culture, and Treasures.

A trip back in history:

Sarangani Province was born through the efforts of Congressman James L. Chiongbian in 1992, by the passing of Republic Act 7228.  Formerly the area was part of the 3rd District of South Cotabato. It became a separate province on May 19, 1992.

MunaTo Festival is coined from two Blaan words that means “First People”.  The anthropomorphic jars found in the caves of Maitum (Ayub, Pinol, and Sagel), give clues to Mindanao’s early history and of the Philippines as a whole. The carbon dated anthropomorphic jars depicts that Maitum was the home of early civilization dating back to the Metal age. The original jars are currently in the National Museum for safekeeping and exhibition.  Based on the historical time line of the early history of the Philippines, after the Tabon Cave in Palawan, the next earliest pottery is found in Pinol Cave in Maitum.  Thus the claim that in Mindanao, the First People or “Munah To”, possibly are from Maitum, Sarangani Province.

MunaTo Festival was conceptualized back in 2002. The idea was to create a cultural festival that will celebrate the vibrant diversity of Sarangani Province. It has been celebrated yearly bringing the 7 municipalities of  Sarangani together and featuring the best in each town.

KYLE BANAAG: Youngest Paraglider Pilot in Ph

5:50 PM 0 Comments A+ a-

I wonder what kind of air we Generals take into our lungs because General Santos City, Philippines seems to be teeming with fantastic personalities! And speaking of air, here's another son of Gensan who is so in love with aerospace, he is making a playground out of it!

Meet Edyl Kylie Estipona Banaag. 14 years old. Youngest paraglider pilot in the country in his time. Yap! You heard me right. This boy jumps into thin air and glides over breathtaking views thousands of meters above sea level ( or even higher, if mother nature allows!) as if taking off from an anthill. Piece of cake!

photo lifted from owner's fb account

During the 1st Lake Sebu Paragliding Adventure that was organized by the Local Government, the Soxbloggers were able to witness Kyle prepare his canopy, launch from the paragliding site , marry the cold wind and wheel away gliding over the magnificent view of the lake.

According to his mom Me-Ann, who happens to be a friend of mine, Kyle developed this fascination in paragliding when he was 12. Since he was too skinny back then, and there was no wing that would be appropriate for his weight, Kyle took some kiting lessons instead. Hence, when he was heavy enough, controlling his wing came as easy as 1-2-3!

At the Lake Sebu Paragliding Adventure, Kyle plunged into the air at least four times not minding the thick fog that was occasionally hiding the picturesque view of the lake from our sight.

Notice the coconut tree from each frame. Its the same location .
Photos taken during the same day on different intervals

Kyle, the youngest in the brood of four, trained under his father Edil, Head for Operations of AKFIG Paragliding Adventure, enthusiasts of the recreational and competitive adventure sports of paragliding in the SOCSKSARGEN Region.

Having Kyle in the team not only brought pride to his father, who is a paraglider pilot himself, but it actually helped the team encourage kids of Kyle's age to train and engage themselves in this kind of activity. Currently , Akfig is training a few boys from Sarangani Province who  used to help the team prepare the paragliding site for activities like fun flying.

An 8th grader from the General Santos City National Secondary School of Arts and Trade, Kyle will be featured in Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho come November 20, 2016 so don't forget to tune in. We see another Gensan  Sensation in the making here!

Wanna experience the thrill of paragliding? Contact Akfig Paragliding Adventure. They offer Basic Paragliding Course and Tandem Flying . Tandem flying rates start at Php 3,500 which includes round trip transportation from pick-up point and fly site, certificate and action camera footage of the flight.

You may also give Edil Banaag a beep at 0917.712.1868.

I Survived Eyebrow Embroidery!

10:53 PM 0 Comments A+ a-

Ever had that "Feeling Alien" moment whenever you take the plunge into the pool? Yung pag-ahon mo, naglaho bigla ang kilay mo? Or have you ever grown tired of mastering the art of drawing kilay2000 every time? I know right!

The eyes are said to be the windows of your soul, and the brows? They are the frame, dahlin! The prettier your brows are coupled with the perfect arch  make those pair on fleek!

My friend Jacque, an airbrush makeup expert,  has been itching to get  her blades on my "you-can-count-on-your-fingertips" brows and needless to say, after weeks of trying to evade her, I gave in! Curiosity and social media hype, you  are to be blamed! (May masisi lang! Lol!)

So with butterflies turning my stomach into a playground, I head on to meet with Jacque! There were about three girls when I got to the meeting place and they all looked like Betty Lafea (peace , ladies! We all got the chance to play the part! yay!)

After the beso-beso and pleasantries with the girls, Jacque applied some numbing cream on my eyebrows and motioned for the other lady who was due for the blade while I settled to observe (and entertain thoughts of backing out) . Ugh! I was like, "okay  lang , te? Is it bearable?" She gave me a thumbs up, and that zapped all 'em butterflies away.

MY TURN!

While Jacque was preparing her stuff, we had a chance to talk about our first meeting. Jacque was one of our exhibitors in Kasalang Filipino back in 2013, featuring Da Hue Bliss Beauty Bar, a beauty center and spa that she owns and manage. Jacque was one of the makeup artists, if not the first, to introduce airbrush makeup in General Santos City . Little did I know that she was already into eyebrow embroidery at that time! Wow! I've got a pro here doing my slivering my brows!

A few more trips down memory lane and violah, I'm done! Oi! I survived eyebrow embroidery! Look at my brand new pair of full eyebrows!
Taken immediately after the procedure.  Credits to Jacque.
PAIN SCALE.

As of this writing, my brows are still on its way to healing and will soon be due for a retouch. The whole process took a little less than two  hours including the time spent waiting for the numbing cream to work and for the pigment ink to kinda soak, which was about  30 minutes each.

If you ask me whether it's painful or not, I guess it depends on one's threshold for pain. When Jacque gave me the first slice, I can't even feel it, thanks to the mighty numbing cream. Eventually, as it's effect wore off, a mild pain can be felt. The one you feel when you prick on your blackheads , minus the gigil!
My Betty Lafea momenti

CARE FOR THE BEAR!

I was told to avoid washing the brows for about 3 days , so cleaning the face got kinda challenging but that's about it. I was back to my normal shower chuchu in no time.

I WOKE UP LIKE THIS!

I'm glad I had my eyebrows done! Saved me a couple of minutes before hitting the road each day (it takes time drawing beautifully arched eyebrows, ya know), never had to worry about the alien-look no more (swimming pool, here I come!) and, I might just brave an "I woke up like this" post on your walls! Teehee!

Thinking of doing your brows? Get in touch with Ms. Jacque Kate , (just click on her name to get to her FB account) owner of Da Hue Bliss Beauty Bar ,  a Singapore trained eyebrow embroidery specialist.

12:03 AM 0 Comments A+ a-

This came in the mail today: UNICEF's call to help save children at Masepla in Zamboanga from STUNTING, a form of malnutrition caused by insufficient nutrient intake or frequent infections.

Studies have shown that malnutrition has a long-term effect if not treated within the first 1000 days of a child's life,an extremely crucial period that influences their future growth.

Small help makes a Big Impact.
UNICEF helps save severely malnourished children through their Severe Acute Malnutrition Management Programmes and provides these little ones with Ready-to-use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) that help their young bodies recover from the toll of malnutrition, and provide them with all the nutrients they need to become stronger.

A single RUTF sachet costs just P20-a small amount that can make a life-changing difference for these children. I'm sure lots of us wont mind missing a cup of our favorite coffee from the neighborhood coffee shop or saying no to the urge of getting a quick bite on that oh-so-sinfully-yummy burger.

Supporting UNICEF makes it possible for us to reach out to more children and create lasting change in their lives. Give to UNICEF. I just did. No amount is too small if we all but give a part of us, after all , it takes a village to raise a child. :)

UNICEF's MISSION:

As a leading child rights advocacy organization, UNICEF Philippines will: advocate that every child in the Philippines has the environment they need for their growth, development and security; increase the number of organisations involved in securing the highest standards of care for children and the fulfillment of their rights; and, as managers of resources for all children, operate in a way that is transparent, effective and accountable.

One with the legions of Filipinos excited for the arrival of Pokemon GO in the country, leading mobile services provider Smart Communications has announced that it will give subscribers 7 days of free data access to Pokemon GO upon the launch of the hit game in the Philippines. This offer is available on both Android and iOS users.

Smart and TNT subscribers who are using iPhones or Android smartphones can enjoy 7 days free data access to Pokemon GO upon accessing the game and start playing without data charges for 7 days upon the launch of the game in the country.

A worldwide phenomenon

A location-based augmented reality mobile game, Pokemon GO lets players assume the role of a trainer who discovers and catches Pokemon or “pocket monsters” as if in real life using the GPS and camera of their smartphones. Players level up their Pokemon and battle other trainers to gain Pok├ęcoins that can be spent on in-game items. Developed by Niantic Labs in partnership with Nintendo affiliate The Pokemon Company, Pokemon GO has swept gamers since it was first launched in the USA, Australia and New Zealand on July 6. The game is now available in over 30 countries, including Japan, where the original Pokemon game and anime series originated.

#PHforPokemonGO campaign

“Smart is one with the whole nation in waiting for Pokemon GO to finally go live in the Philippines, and we are very excited to welcome the game in our own big way,” said Kathy C. Carag, Smart Mobile Business Head. “Smart subscribers nationwide can look forward to more special treats and promos that will allow them to make the most of their Pokemon GO experience.” Drumming up the excitement among millions of Filipino fans, Smart joined the rally for #PHForPokemonGO on social media since the game was released in select markets last July 6.  On Twitter alone, the anticipation and clamor for the game reached more than 14 million impressions on over the last couple of weeks for Smart and Pokemon Go.

Leveled-up Pokemon GO experience

Smart and TNT subscribers can easily level up their gameplay via convenient and secure Pokemon Go in-app purchases even without a credit card. With Smart’s Google Direct Carrier Billing for Android users, subscribers can easily purchase Pokecoins, Pokemon Go’s currency mainly used for buying items that will help gamers catch Pokemons – directly charged to their prepaid load or postpaid account. Smart Postpaid subscribers who are iPhone users can also conveniently buy Pokecoins, charged to their monthly billing, through Smart’s Pay-With- Mobile service.
